SORORITY? WHY IT'S FOR YOU!

Before deciding to write this blog post, I received several judgmental statements, comments, etc; regarding the fact that I was from the south and having joined a sorority during my time in college. People in New York don’t seem to quite understand, but who could blame them. Sororities originated from the south and what is considered a big deal in New York city is which side of town you hang out after hours, your drink of choice, and how effortlessly cool you seemingly dress. It’s easy for anyone, in no regard to geography, to associate the sorority girl with what they may typically see on TV. I normally tell people what is, seen or previously known to be true about sorority girls, COMPLETELY false. That’s a half lie. I like to peg myself as an honest woman, but this is not totally true. There definitely is hazing that goes on, crazy partying, underage drinking, creepy frat boys, and mega rivals between other sororities that at the time, feel like the biggest drama of all eternity. You soon realize that these things are so small in comparison to all the positive things you take home with you, things like; sisters, values, memories. My senior year I realized just how giving the sorority can actually be to you (it’s like Church!) After all the countless hours and money, I still got back soooo much more than I had put into it. To clear the air, YES, they are expensive. I will say I paid for over half of my sorority experience completely on my own…with the help of my loving Grandmother. Everyone who knows me knows I wouldn’t waste a penny on anything that can’t be worn or ate LOL so this was a major life investment for me! Aside from having the absolute time of my life, making memories, stupid mistakes, laughs, and even chipping a front tooth…(long story)…being a member of my chapter gave me a greater purpose during my college years. It helped me stay accountable for my grades, grow in leadership and confidence, and make the absolute best friends that will one day be my brides maids. These are the reasons why moving to NY was so damn hard and still is!!! Because of my chapter, I formed memories, relationships, and a bond with my college town that made these years the best I could have ever imagined and I’ve ever had thus far, and as hard as it is to leave them, I’m so thankful. I’m thankful for the best times, I’m thankful that I have something so special to hold on to, and thankful that I strive to make even more beautiful memories in my future.
