INTERN FOR LIFE

INTERN FOR LIFE

As most of you know, I am no longer an intern, I work as a children’s wear designer in NYC, but as someone who was an intern not once, but twice and never thought I’d ever land a real job, I decided to write this for all of you guys! I started off as a design intern the summer before my senior year for a major high fashion company, it was the best experience I could of asked for, I learned so much and truly thought I could have a job after graduation. This didn’t happen lol and should NOT be expected, especially in the fashion industry. Most companies want people with real work experience, as a graduate, they consider you to have none, and those fancy internships do not count, though, they are absolutely necessary to have on your resume, makes sense right?! (Lol no, it doesn’t, but alas this is the way of the world.) After graduating I accepted another internship, which was disappointing, but it’s important to note that many of you will be forced to work numerous internships before landing a job. It was a step up from the first internship, it was paid which was nice because it allowed me to make a little money while I searched for a full time job. My time as an intern the second round was difficult because though, I learned a lot, I wasn’t being paid nearly enough for my services and I personally felt I would never be taken seriously for anything other than that. But it’s important to know that I never gave up, this internship gave me time to gain industry skills, add to my resume, and look find out exactly what I wanted to do and where I wanted to be. Since most internships aren’t full time, my time off gave me time to meet with head hunters, apply to jobs, perfect my resume, and interview. Being an intern, I was miserable, but it also allowed me to know my worth and gave me the confidence I needed to land a full time job. Coming out of college, finding a job it daunting, this internship gave me the time I needed to grow and remind myself of just how capable I was of so much more. It really was a God thing, and in the end it all works out. No matter how many internships and coffee runs, and personally errands for your boss you have to run, believe it or not it does better you and it DOES have an end. The best course of action for me was using linked in and finding a head hunter, this ultimately helped me land the job much faster. And also drawing a line of what jobs to take and not to take, though you have no experience, you still want to create boundaries and needs in a job for yourself. You do not want to be too confident in yourself and most of you all will not land your dream job immediately, but this is a good thing. Making small scarifies in your first job will allow you to find one quicker, and gives you room to grow. If we all landed our dream jobs right out of college, none of us would have anything to work for or look forward too in the future. I remember I had a friend tell me I would never land a job as a designer right out of college, but clearly with hard work, perseverance, and faith, I promise you, you won’t remain an intern for eternity.
