5 IMPORTANT THINGS TO DO WHEN TIMES ARE HARD

Difficult times?? I’ve got plenty! During this time of the Coronavirus pandemic, things are unquestionably uncertain and scary. Without the fear of the virus itself and our loved one’s getting sick, people are losing their jobs, businesses are suffering, and we’re all trying to keep from losing it while we stay hunkered down in our homes. This is an undoubtedly scary time in our nation’s history, and some of you may be experiencing other difficulties non related to the virus. For me, my emotions themselves are very uncertain from the moment I wake up in the morning. I have felt great anxiety, fear and sadness of being away from my friends and social life, and being out of my normal work routine. Others are working from home and have to rewire their brains into working completely differently. Maybe you’re in a house full of family and distractions or maybe you live alone and are feeling great loneliness. Whatever or whoever your feeling during this time, we all are pushed out our comfort zones and must adapt right now. Bellow I’ll begin to discuss ways in which I continue to find little wins or joys in the day. These have honestly helped me to get out of bed in the morning. I’d love for you all to comment on different ways you guys have found joy in the day!
COMMUNITY
Creating a sense of normal community for myself is the biggest way I continue to find joy. Community meaning people, whether that be keeping in touch with your best friends, creating a group text, calling family members, talking to coworkers, even checking up on neighbors. Talking to others is comforting during uncertain times, it helps us to maintain a normal sense of community that we would of had otherwise, before this difficult time. It also helps us to remember that we are not alone, and we are all experiencing a huge change right now together. Keep in touch with anyone and everyone you can, it’s a 100% mood booster!
HEALTH
It’s proven that in times of difficulty and hardship that eating healthy and getting continuous exercise not only keeps your body healthy but also your mind. Getting fresh air and exercise, while eating clean fruits and vegetables, instead of processed foods has a direct effect on your mental health. Eating healthier and feeling good about yourself releases endorphins that will help you get out of bed. This will even give you something to do during the day - such as trying a new healthy recipes or a new in home work out! Afterward, finish off with a hot relaxing bubble bath and a glass of wine to reward yourself. And don’t forget, it is completely okay to want sweets or junk food during a difficult time. Comfort food IS good for your mental health, but only in moderation!
HOBBIES
Everyone knows keeping busy during a difficult time is good for mental health. We must have something to look forward to because it allows us to maintain a sense of purpose and help us pass the time. This could involve focusing on work, a career, or our goals and advancements. For those who aren’t working, find hobbies and make a list of to dos or goals for yourself. For me, I write this blog, exercise, try new baking/cooking recipes, spend time with family and friends (or right now during quarantine, talk to them on the phone), take walks, I started a puzzle, and simply enjoy the fresh air on my patio. Even for those of you who may work from home, it’s even more important to find time outside of work to do things that bring joy, remember to separate yourself from your at-home work space each day.
SELF MAINTENANCE
I think it’s normal during times of depression or anxiety to forget to take care of your outward self. We know it’s important to take care of the insides, but it’s 100% proven that keeping up with your appearance has a positive effect on mental health as well. It’s easy to get in a habit of staying in your pj’s all day, no makeup and messy hair when you’re not going anywhere or seeing anyone. However, putting in a little effort may give you some happiness or drive to accomplish something new. Try putting on some moisturizer and brushing your hair and teeth at the very least! Continuing to groom yourself while putting in a small amount of effort with your appearance will help you to keep some sense of normalcy. I promise it will help you feel better!
REST AND PRAYER
During any time of change, difficulty or uncertainty, it is vital to keep busy and keep the sense of normalcy as I’ve referred to above, but it’s almost just as vital to slow down and rest. A healthy balance of the two is extremely important. We are often caught up in our to do lists or goals, but giving your body and mind a time and place to rest will ease your mind, boost your mood, and renew your body. You will in return be happier and have more energy to devote to your family, friends, career, or whatever is important to you.
I included prayer in this bullet, and while I realize not everyone is religious, many do meditate which can take the place of prayer. Prayer for me goes hand in hand with rest, oftentimes praying soothes my anxiety, allowing me to sleep. Other times prayer acts as a sense of rest if I just need a simple pause from the universe. Praying, not only allows my mind and body to reset but also helps me keep a little faith during seasons of change. This allows me to go through the season much easier and happier once I’ve rested and renewed. I encourage all of you to start and end each day with prayer or meditation and get an ample amount of sleep each night (something I’m working on).
In summary, lets remember we have all gone through challenges and survived. If you haven’t, you most certainly will experience them later on in life. You CAN handle it!! Find the beauty in all of this crazy mess, yes its hard and can suck at times, but stop and see the beauty in it. Ask yourself, how will this change yourself or your life for the better? What is this teaching me? And do I value something different than before? The way you look at something can completely alter your perception of the challenge itself. And mostly, one small change can make a huge difference. Whether that be one change in your mind set, a new daily routine, or new goals. If these 5 steps I’ve suggested intimidate you, then practice one at a time. Difficult times can be debilitating, but only if you let them!
